Almost always on paper. The question is whether you will drink it before it goes flat — and that has an arithmetic answer.
Bulk buying is the largest reliable saving available in packaged coffee, and it is also the easiest one to get wrong. The saving is real and roughly a third; the risk is that stale coffee you throw away costs more per cup than the small bag you were avoiding.
How much bulk actually saves
Packaging, labelling and shipping costs are close to fixed per bag rather than per kilo, so they are spread thinner as the bag gets bigger. Across the coffee we track, moving from a 250g bag to a 1kg bag of the same product typically drops price per kilo by 25% to 40%. Going beyond 1kg saves less, because by then the fixed costs are already diluted.

The freshness limit
Roasted beans are at their best from about three days to six weeks after roasting. Ground coffee degrades far faster — days rather than weeks once opened. Instant is effectively stable, and pods are nitrogen-flushed and sealed, so both are much more forgiving of bulk buying.
- Work out your weekly consumption: cups per day × 7 × dose. Two 18g cups a day is about 250g a week.
- Multiply by six weeks. That is your maximum sensible bean purchase — about 1.5kg in this example.
- Buy the largest bag at or under that figure. Above it, you are buying coffee you will drink stale.
Freezing works, and it works well, if you do it properly: divide into weekly portions, seal them airtight, and take out one at a time without refreezing. Repeatedly opening one big frozen bag is worse than not freezing at all.
When bulk is the wrong call
- You are still working out what you like. A 3kg bag is a very expensive way to discover you prefer a lighter roast.
- You drink under a cup a day. Even a 1kg bag is a two-month commitment.
- It is pre-ground. The freshness window is short enough that the saving rarely survives it.
- The 'bulk' price is not actually lower per kilo. It happens more often than you would expect — always check.
