Every Café Direct coffee we track, priced per cup, and which bag is actually the cheap one.
Coffee is sold by the bag and drunk by the cup, and the two almost never rank in the same order. A Café Direct bag that looks dear on the shelf can turn out to be the cheapest thing here once you divide it out, and the one that looks like a bargain often is not. So here is every Café Direct coffee we track, across whole bean, ground and instant, on one honest unit.

What Café Direct coffee costs
The range runs from 9p to 55p a cup across 15 products. That is a 6.1× spread inside a single brand, which is why "is Café Direct expensive" is the wrong question; the right one is which bag you pick. The cheapest is Freeze Dried Mayan Gold Coffee 6 x in the 600g, and the dearest is Mayan Gold Organic in the 1.2kg.
| Product | Format | Size | Per cup | Per kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze Dried Mayan Gold Coffee 6 x | instant | 600g | £0.09 | £45.53 |
| Machu Picchu | instant | 600g | £0.12 | £59.92 |
| Smooth Roast | instant | 500g | £0.12 | £61.88 |
| Freeze Dried Mayan Gold | instant | 100g | £0.19 | £95.90 |

| Machu Picchu | whole bean | 750g | £0.36 | £20.25 |

| Mayan Gold Organic | whole bean | 1.2kg | £0.46 | £25.75 |
Bags themselves run £4.50 to £36.77. Ignore that column. A bigger bag costs more and almost always costs less per cup, which is the only number that follows you home.
The one to buy
If you buy one thing from Café Direct, buy Cauca Valley Colombia. At 41p a cup it comes in around 43% under the median for ground coffee, and that is measured against every brand in our catalogue rather than against Café Direct's own list prices. Nothing else in the range gets close on that test.

What that costs over a year
How much coffee do you drink?
- Café Direct£0.41 per cup£296
- Typical ground£0.71 per cup, our median£516
At 2 cups a day, Café Direct costs £220 less a year than the typical ground coffee we track. That is the same coffee habit, bought better.
How to pay less for it
- Read the per-cup column, not the shelf price. They order differently more often than not.
- Buy the biggest bag you will finish in about six weeks. Pack size moves the per-kilo price further than anything else on this page.
- Check whether the same coffee turns up in a larger bag further down the range. It often does, at a lower rate.
- Check again before you reorder. Whoever was cheapest last month frequently is not.
