Under-£10 is how most people actually shop — a budget per pack rather than a target price per kilo. It is a perfectly reasonable way to buy, as long as you know that within that same tenner the price per cup can vary by a factor of three.

How to spend a tenner well
- Decide on grams first, not on the bag that looks nicest.
- Check the price per 100g or per kilo, which does the comparison for you.
- Only go under 500g if you are trying something new or you drink very little.
- If you are close to a free-postage threshold, adding a second bag is usually cheaper per kilo than paying for delivery.
